EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Different types of hookah pipes of India," is a hand-colored copperplate engraving drawn and engraved by Andrea Bernieri after Francois Solvyns, from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. The illustration showcases an intriguing collection of various hookah pipes used in India during the 19th century. Hookah pipes, also known as huches or water pipes, have been a significant part of Indian culture for centuries. This image displays six distinct types of hookah pipes: gargara, snake hookah, cheroot, narikel, and two types of gargara. The gargara hookah, depicted on the far left, is characterized by its long, slender stem and a bulbous base. The snake hookah, in the middle, features a long, coiled tube that resembles a snake, giving it its name. The cheroot hookah, on the right, is a small, cylindrical pipe with a closed base and a filter at the end. The remaining three pipes are all variations of the gargara hookah. The first one, next to the cheroot, has a more rounded base and a shorter stem. The second one, in the center, has a more elongated base and a longer, curved stem. Lastly, the last gargara pipe, on the far right, has a unique, conical base. Each pipe is intricately designed, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into creating these works of art. The use of hand-coloring adds an extra layer of vibrancy and depth to the illustration, making it a truly mesmerizing piece of historical art.
