EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, hailing from Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History in Leipzig, published in 1842, showcases two fascinating electric fish species: the Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus, formerly known as Gymnotus electricus) and the Electric Catfish (Malapterurus electricus). Both fish are renowned for their unique ability to generate and utilize electric currents for hunting and defense. The Electric Eel, depicted on the left, is the largest known electric fish, growing up to 8 feet long. It produces electric shocks of up to 600 volts and 1 ampere, which it uses to stun its prey before consuming it. The Electric Eel's elongated body is filled with specialized organs called 'electrocytes,' which generate the electric current. On the right, the Electric Catfish, measuring around 2 feet, is a smaller but equally impressive electric fish. It can generate electric shocks of up to 200 volts and 0.5 amperes. The Electric Catfish uses its electric discharge to stun its prey and navigate its environment. These electric fish are essential subjects of study in the field of ichthyology, providing valuable insights into the evolution of electrical sensory systems and the adaptive functions of electric organs in aquatic organisms. The intricate details of these fish, expertly rendered in this hand-colored lithograph, serve as a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
