EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph showcases Etienne Melingue in the role of Fernand in the 1844 production of "Les Amans de Murcie" (The Lovers of Murcie) at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu in Paris. The image, created by Frederic Soulie and based on an illustration by Victor Dollet, was published in the prestigious "Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris" (Dramatic Gallery: Costumes of the Parisian Theatres) in 1845. Melingue, a renowned French actor of the 19th century, masterfully portrays Fernand, a character from the tragic play by Alexandre Lacauchie. Fernand is a nobleman who is deeply in love with Leonore, played by the famous actress Rachel, but is unable to be with her due to her lower social status. The intensity of Melingue's expression in this lithograph conveys the anguish and longing that Fernand feels, making it a powerful representation of his character. The intricate details of Melingue's stage costume, which includes a velvet doublet, lace jabot, and a sash, are beautifully captured in this hand-colored lithograph. The elegant design of the costume, combined with Melingue's expressive performance, would have surely left a lasting impression on the audiences of the time. This lithograph is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the 19th-century French theatre scene, and serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Etienne Melingue and his iconic portrayal of Fernand in "Les Amans de Murcie.
