EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the German Empress Cactus, Disocactus phyllanthoides, a captivating plant that goes by several other names including Cactus phyllanthoides, Cactus speciosus, and Catto elegante. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was expertly engraved by Giarre and meticulously directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects. The German Empress Cactus is native to Madagascar and is characterized by its unique, multi-stemmed growth habit and the abundance of its vibrant, star-shaped flowers. Each stem bears numerous small, sarcolena-shaped leaves, and during the blooming season, the plant is adorned with clusters of di moli fiori, or many flowers. The edible fruit of the German Empress Cactus is a popular vegetable in some regions, adding an intriguing historical and culinary aspect to this fascinating botanical specimen. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the intricacies of the plant's structure, providing a window into the natural world and the remarkable work of Turpin and Jussieu.
