EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking chromolithograph depicts the 14th century armour of Gottfried Count of Arensberg, as preserved in his tomb effigy at Frankfurt Cathedral. The Count, who lived between 1370 and an unknown date, is shown wearing a suit of iron armour, complemented by a leather surcoat bearing his distinctive coat of arms. The heraldic crest features a unicorn, a symbol of purity and strength, which is also depicted on the Count's great helm and shield. The intricate design of the helmzier, or helmet decoration, showcases the elaborate craftsmanship of the time, reflecting the chivalric values and fashion of the Middle Ages. The Count's escutcheon, or shield boss, is adorned with a stechhelm, a type of helmet with a visor that could be raised or lowered. This detailed illustration was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. Hefner-Alteneck meticulously captured the essence of this historical artifact, providing us with a glimpse into the rich tapestry of European history and the fashion of the Middle Ages.
