EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print showcases a revered gathering of Hindu deities, including the Trimurti - the divine triad of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The image, drawn and engraved by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1844, offers a glimpse into the rich and complex Hindu pantheon. Brahma, the creator of the universe, is depicted as a bearded elder with four heads, symbolizing the four Vedas, and four arms, each holding a lotus, a conch shell, a book, and a mala (rosary). Vishnu, the preserver, is shown with four arms, holding a conch shell, a discus, a lotus, and a mace. His blue complexion represents the cosmic ocean from which he emerged. Shiva, the destroyer and transformer, is illustrated with multiple arms, adorned with a third eye, serene yet powerful, and surrounded by symbols of destruction and regeneration, such as the crescent moon and the trident. The intricate details of the deities' adornments, their serene expressions, and the harmonious composition of the image, all contribute to the profound spiritual significance of this print. The Hindu gods, as depicted in this exquisite work of art, embody the cyclical nature of creation, preservation, and destruction, and serve as a reminder of the deep connection between the divine and the natural world. This print is not only a testament to the artistic prowess of Andrea Bernieri and Giulio Ferrario but also a valuable historical document that offers insights into the Hindu religious traditions of the 19th century. It is a beautiful representation of the Hindu Trimurti and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
