EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate print depicts various incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu, as illustrated by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy in 1844. Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism, is known for his role as the preserver of the universe. He is believed to have taken on ten avatars or incarnations to restore the balance of good over evil in the world. The central figure in this illustration is Vishnu in his most famous incarnation as Krishna, depicted here holding a flute and surrounded by his consort Radha and other gopis. To his left, we see Vishnu as Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, who is shown with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. To the right, we find Vishnu as the boar incarnation, Varaha, who rescued the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha. At the bottom, we see Vishnu as the fish incarnation, Matsya, who saved the Vedas from the flood. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this copperplate engraving provide a stunning visual representation of the richness and complexity of Hindu mythology. The illustration also offers a glimpse into the artistic traditions of 19th-century Europe, where scholars and travelers were deeply interested in documenting the costumes and customs of people from around the world.
