The image, produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an illustration by J.W. Ludlow for Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry," published by Cassell, London, in 1890, offers a glimpse into the height of the bantam craze during this period. The Japanese White Bantams, represented in the foreground, were a prized breed, as evidenced by Mrs. Woodcock's first-prize win at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1872.
