Jewish Memorial Statue, Nijmegen, Holland

Inspired by Paul de Swaat, this sculpture of a mourning lady looking towards the old Jewish Schul, was unveiled in 1995. The figure stands beneath a tree and is surrounded by railings in which there are Stars of David. Within the railings is a plaque which reads, Kom vanavond met vernalen hoe de oorlog is verdwenen en herhaal ze duizend malen alle malen zal ik wenen. These are lines by the Dutch poet Leo Roman which translate as, Tonight come with stories of how the war has faded away and repeat them a thousand times. I will weep every time. Frits Philips, who ran the Philips factory during the period of Occupation, managed to protect many Jews as members of his workforce. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the Jewish Memorial Statue, located in Nijmegen, Holland, which was inspired by the sculpture created by Dutch artist Paul de Swaat and unveiled in 1995. The sculpture depicts a mourning lady, dressed in traditional Jewish attire, standing beneath a tree and surrounded by railings adorned with Stars of David. The figure's melancholic gaze is fixed towards the Old Jewish Schul, a historic Jewish school that once stood in the area. The railings enclose a plaque inscribed with the lines of the Dutch poet Leo Roman: "Tonight come with stories of how the war has faded away and repeat them a thousand times. I will weep every time." These words serve as a poignant reminder of the atrocities suffered during the Holocaust and the importance of preserving the memories of those who perished. The statue was inspired by the actions of Frits Philips, who managed the Philips factory during the period of Occupation. Despite the challenges of the time, Philips is known for having protected many Jews as members of his workforce, saving them from the horrors of the Holocaust. This powerful and moving tribute stands as a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Nijmegen and serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering the past and honoring the memories of those who were lost.
