Normans attacking Hereward the Wakes refuge
Hereward the Wake, also known as Hereward the Outlaw or Hereward the Exile (1035-1072) - an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and a leader of local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England. His base was the Isle of Ely in East Anglia, giving Hereward an excellent natural defence, which was only breached when the Normans build a stone bridge out to the Island (as shown here).

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity and chaos of the Normans' assault on Hereward the Wake's refuge on the Isle of Ely in 1070. Hereward, an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and a leader of local resistance to the Norman Conquest of England, had made the island his base due to its excellent natural defences, which included the marshy fens and boggy terrain. However, the Normans, led by their formidable soldiers and cavalry, were determined to breach the island's defences and crush the rebellion. In this scene, the Normans are shown building a stone bridge out to the island, allowing their troops to advance towards Hereward's camp. The Anglo-Saxon rebels, led by their charismatic leader, are shown fighting fiercely to defend their land and freedom. The clash between the two forces is depicted as a pivotal moment in English history, with the Normans ultimately emerging victorious and solidifying their control over the country. Hereward, also known as Hereward the Outlaw or Hereward the Exile, had rebelled against the Normans due to their harsh rule and disregard for Anglo-Saxon customs. His resistance movement gained widespread support among the local population, making him a symbol of hope and defiance against foreign occupation. Despite the eventual defeat of his rebellion, Hereward's legacy lived on and continues to inspire generations of English patriots.
