EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Peacocks Tail, Padina Pavonica 1 and Dictyota Dichotoma 2," is an exquisite example of 19th-century botanical illustration. The illustration is from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Carini, with drawings and direction by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The image features two types of seaweed: Padina Pavonica, also known as the Peacock's Tail, and Dictyota Dichotoma. The former is a red alga, commonly referred to as sugar kelp or Saccharina Latissima, which is known for its fan-like fronds that resemble the tail feathers of a peacock. The latter is a brown alga, Dictyota Dichotoma, also known as red seaweed or Delesseria Sanguinea. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the textures and colors of these seaweeds, with the Peacock's Tail displaying vibrant red hues and the Dictyota Dichotoma exhibiting a more subdued brown coloration. The illustration also includes several other seaweeds, such as Porphyra Purpurea, Osmundaria Fimbriata, Fucus Saccharinus, and Ulva Delislea, among others. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work continues to be celebrated for its accuracy, beauty, and historical significance. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill that characterized Turpin's work, as well as the broader field of botanical illustration during this period.
