EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Romulus Augustulus, the last Western Roman Emperor, who ruled from 475 to 476 AD. Born as Flavius Orestes' son, Romulus assumed the imperial title at the tender age of 12, under the regency of his mother, Placidia, and the influence of the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno, who was an Isaurian. Romulus' reign was marked by the end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the Dark Ages in Europe. The engraving, created by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salmas in Utrecht in 1697, is a testament to the enduring fascination with the Roman Empire and its emperors. The copperplate technique used in the engraving allowed for high-quality, detailed reproductions, making this image a valuable historical document. Romulus Augustulus is shown wearing the imperial purple robe and diadem, symbolizing his imperial power. His expression is serious, reflecting the gravity of the historical moment. The inscription at the bottom of the portrait identifies him as "Romulus Augustus, Caesar, Flavius, Augustus, Tarasis, Kodisa, Rousombladadiotes." These titles reflect his various roles and allegiances, including his status as a Caesar, a member of the Flavian dynasty, and his connection to the Eastern Roman Empire. The portrait also includes the image of a token coin from the reign of Zeno, emphasizing the connection between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires during Romulus' rule. This engraving offers a glimpse into the complex political landscape of the late Roman Empire and the transition to the Middle Ages.
