EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Hermine of Reuss-Schleiz (1887-1947), the second wife of the former German Kaiser Wilhelm II, is seen with her three young children: Prince Georg Wilhelm (b. 1906), Princess Hermine Caroline (b. 1907), and Prince Ferdinand (b. 1912). The image was captured at their exile residence in Doorn, the Netherlands, in 1923. Princess Hermine, a granddaughter of Duke Hermann of Reuss-Schleiz, married Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1922, following the death of his first wife, Empress Frederick. Their union was met with controversy and opposition from the German public, as many still held a deep resentment towards the ex-Kaiser for his role in World War I. Despite the challenges, the family appears joyful and content in this portrait. The children, dressed in fashionable clothing of the era, playfully interact with their mother, while the Kaiser looks on with a loving expression. The warm, natural light and soft focus of the photograph create an intimate and heartwarming scene, capturing the essence of family life. The peaceful setting of their exile in Doorn provided a respite from the political turmoil and upheaval that had engulfed Germany following the war. The family lived in relative seclusion, away from the public eye, allowing them to focus on raising their children and maintaining a semblance of normalcy in their lives. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the personal lives of the former imperial family, providing a poignant reminder of the human side of history and the enduring bonds of love and family.
