EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving by Jean Victor Dupin junior, titled "Quince tree and fruit, Cydonia oblonga," is a stunning example of the botanical artistry of the late 18th century. The Quince tree, scientifically known as Cydonia oblonga or Pyrus cydonia, is a deciduous tree native to the Caucasus region and southwestern Asia. The tree is depicted here in full bloom, its branches laden with the distinctive, golden-yellow fruits. The Quince is a member of the Rosaceae family and is closely related to the pear and apple. The fruit is unique in that it must be cooked before eating due to its high tannin content, making it a popular ingredient in jams, jellies, and preserves. The tree is also known for its attractive, glossy leaves, which are depicted here as undulating, atro, and variegated. Surrounding the Quince tree in this engraving are various other plants and botanical specimens. These include the African Violet, Sansevieria trifasciata, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Aloe vera, Dracaena guinensis, Radice geniculata, Commelina alba, and Aloes de Guinee. The snake tongue or Dracaena marginata is also depicted in the lower left corner, adding an intriguing element to the composition. This engraving is from Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial, representant plus de quinze cents plates, tant Europeennes qu'Exotiques, published in Paris in 1783. The Herbier Artificial was a comprehensive botanical work that showcased a wide range of European and exotic plants, making it an essential resource for botanists, horticulturists, and artists of the time. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of Jean Victor Dupin junior and the importance of botanical illustration in the scientific and artistic communities of the late 18th century.
