EDITORS COMMENTS
This full-page image is taken from The Sphere, a popular British weekly illustrated newspaper, published in 1920 as a special supplement to commemorate the Unknown Warrior. The Unknown Warrior was an unidentified British soldier of the First World War, whose body was brought back from France and interred in Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1920, to represent the countless brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war. The illustration, titled "The Sphere Unknown Warrior," depicts a solemn procession carrying the Unknown Warrior's coffin through the streets of London. The crowd, a sea of mourners, stands in silence, their faces etched with grief and respect. The soldier's coffin is draped in the Union Jack, and a wreath of poppies rests atop it. A horse-drawn hearse leads the procession, followed by soldiers carrying the coffin, and then the mourners. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War, and the unity and resilience of the British people in the face of such loss. The Unknown Warrior's interment in Westminster Abbey was a significant event in British history, and the image of the procession became an iconic symbol of the war's aftermath. This photograph, taken from The Sphere Special Supplement, provides a glimpse into the collective mourning and reflection that took place following the end of the war. It is a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of remembering those who gave their lives for their country.
