EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the enigmatic beauty of the Starfish Flower, or Carrion Plant, Stapelia hirsuta. Discovered in South Africa, this unique plant is a member of the dogbane family, Asclepiadaceae. The Starfish Flower earned its common name due to its distinctive star-shaped corolla, which unfurls to reveal a pungent, rotting smell intended to attract carrion flies for pollination. The Starfish Flower is not the only intriguing aspect of this plant. Its close relatives, Stapelia grandiflora and Stapelia glandulifera, are commonly referred to as Mandrake or Mandragora, due to their resemblance to the legendary root believed to have magical powers. The misconception arose from their humanoid root shape and the belief that they possessed healing properties. This stunning engraving, created by Jean Victor Dupin junior, is part of Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial, a comprehensive collection of over fifteen hundred European and exotic botanical plates. The Herbier Artificial was published in Paris in 1783, marking an essential contribution to the development of botanical art and knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving serve to highlight the captivating allure of the natural world, inspiring curiosity and wonder for generations to come.
