This hand-colored steel engraving, taken from the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) by Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville, published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an intriguing assemblage of wildlife from the Sunda region of Asia. At the center of the image, a critically endangered Sunda pangolin, Manis javanica, is depicted curled up in defense, its protective scales covering its body. The pangolin, a mammal, is the world's most trafficked mammal due to its unique scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a status symbol. Surrounding the pangolin are various insects and a leopard, Panthera pardus. Three horse flies, Tabanus rostratus, are seen buzzing around the pangolin, their long legs and menacing mandibles on full display.
