EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, created by R.V. after an illustration by Francois Courboin from Octave Uzanne's Fashion in Paris, published in 1898, transports us back to the fashionable and cultured society of Paris in the early 19th century. The image depicts a woman in elegant attire, her bonnet adorned with a delicate feather, gazing out of a window overlooking the Panoramas of Boulevard Montmartre. The Panoramas were a popular attraction in Paris at the time, offering cityscapes of Boulogne and Constantinople, as well as battle scenes. In the foreground, a mother and her young girl can be seen whispering to each other, while in the distance, jockeys prepare for the Champ de Mars horse races of 1811. A gentleman in a high-waisted walking dress and spencer jacket, with a shawl draped around his shoulders, leans in to share a secret with another man. The intricate details of the woman's dress, with its high lace collar and intricate patterns, showcase the refined aesthetics of the Empire and Napoleonic era. This stunning image offers a glimpse into the entertainment, sport, and social culture of Paris during a time of great change and excitement.
