EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Yellow Alder, or Turnera ulmifolia, also known as Ramgoat Dashalong, Tatou, Ocarro, Tatu, Canastra, Vulnerable, Aardvark, Orycteropus afer, Giant Armadillo, Priodontes maximus, Oritteropus del Capo, and Good Hope Priodonte. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate stipple engraving technique used to create this image. The Yellow Alder is a shrub or small tree native to Central and South America. It is a vulnerable species, and its populations are declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The Yellow Alder is an important food source for several mammals, including the Aardvark, a large, armored mammal with elongated snout and claws, and the Giant Armadillo, the largest living armadillo species. This beautiful illustration provides a glimpse into the natural history of the Yellow Alder and the diverse array of animals that depend on it. The intricate details captured in the engraving serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Turpin and the importance of documenting the natural world for future generations.
