EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Yellow mombin or Hog Plum tree, Spondias monbin. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Yellow mombin tree is a tropical fruit tree, native to Central and South America. The tree is depicted here with its characteristic horrid, elbow-like thorns, and the small, yellow, round fruits are shown in various stages of ripening. The tree is also surrounded by various crabs and other unknown marine organisms, possibly indicating that the tree grows near the coast. The illustration is a masterpiece of botanical art, with intricate details and precise shading, achieved through the stipple engraving technique. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful and accurate representation of the Yellow mombin tree and its surroundings. The Yellow mombin tree is also known by other names, including Daldorfia horrida, Eurynome rugosa, Parthenope horrida, and Partenope orrida. The tree is important in traditional medicine and is used to make jams, jellies, and other culinary preparations. The fruits are also eaten fresh and are rich in vitamin C and other nutrients. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the skill and artistry of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and the team at Batelli e Figli, who produced it over 180 years ago.
