EDITORS COMMENTS
This image documents the historic arrival of one of the Nineveh sculptures at the British Museum in London on December 21, 1852. The Nineveh sculptures, a significant collection of ancient Assyrian art, were discovered during the mid-19th century excavations of the ancient city of Nineveh in modern-day Iraq. In this photograph, a large Nineveh lion, supported by a wooden frame, is being carefully winched up the stairs at the front of the museum. The lion, an iconic symbol of Assyrian power and royalty, is one of the many masterpieces that were transported to the British Museum as part of the British Museum Expedition to Nineveh, led by Sir Henry Layard and Austen Henry Layard. The arrival of these sculptures marked a pivotal moment in the history of archaeology and the British Museum, expanding its collection and solidifying its reputation as a leading institution for the study and preservation of world cultures. The image captures the sense of anticipation and excitement surrounding the arrival of these priceless artifacts, which continue to captivate and inspire visitors to this day.
