EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from 1857 showcases a Wardian case, an innovative design that combined the beauty of a fern house with the charm of a miniature aviary. Measuring three feet in length, this glass-enclosed wonder boasts a 16-inch-wide cage or aviary, surrounded by 10 inches of space on either side, reserved exclusively for the cultivation of ferns and other exotic plants. The cage itself stands 18 inches high, with a sloping glass roof that begins at this height and rises an additional 9 inches, making the total height of the Wardian case a striking 27 inches. The wire-work cage rises approximately 6 inches above the glass roof, creating a visually stunning and intricate structure. The Wardian case was a popular invention of the Victorian era, designed to bring the lush foliage of the tropics indoors. The inclusion of canaries, as depicted in this photograph, added an extra layer of novelty and delight. Ferns, part of the Polypodiophyta division, thrived in these enclosed environments, their delicate fronds unfurling in the humid conditions created by the glass walls. This image offers a glimpse into the captivating world of indoor gardening during the 1850s, a time when the pursuit of exotic plants and the beauty of nature held great allure.
