EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1860s, showcases two intriguing marine species: the Ophidium Eel (Pholis gunnellus, formerly known as Ophidion imberbe) and the Muraena (Muraena helena). The Ophidium Eel, also referred to as the Beardless Ophidium or Rock Gunner, is a small, brown, mottled fish that grows up to 25 centimeters in length. It was once classified as an eel, but is now recognized as a rockfish within the Pholis genus. The larger, more striking figure in the image is the Muraena, or Mediterranean Moray, also known as the Roman Eel or the Moray Eel. This large eel, a member of the Muraenidae family, can grow up to 1.5 meters in length. Its body is grey with black or brown markings, and its mouth is filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. The Muraena is a master of disguise, able to blend seamlessly into its surroundings with its mottled skin. The photograph, taken in the Victorian era, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past. The Ophidium Eel and Muraena were likely discovered during a deep-sea exploration or fishing expedition, and the image serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity of the ocean. The intricate details of their bodies and markings are beautifully preserved in this historical photograph, providing a fascinating look at these two unique and fascinating marine species.
