Perkin, whose true identity is believed to be Pietro de la Pole, a Flemish impostor, is seen here on horseback, clad in armor, approaching the imposing gates of the abbey. With a small retinue of men and horses following behind him, he sought safety within the walls of this Cistercian monastery, located in the picturesque New Forest in Hampshire. Perkin's presence at Beaulieu Abbey was significant as he claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, one of the two young princes who mysteriously disappeared from the Tower of London in 1483.
