This photograph captures the Hughes XF-11 44-70156, the second prototype of the XF-11 type, during its time at Eglin Field, Florida, in late 1948. The XF-11 was designed and built by Howard Hughes and made its first flight on April 5, 1947. After undergoing operational suitability testing at Wright Field in Ohio from July 1948 to July 1949, the airframe was transferred to Eglin Field for further evaluation. During its stay at Eglin, the XF-11 was used for operational testing and evaluation by the United States Air Force (USAF). After completion of testing, the airframe was transferred to Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas on July 26, 1949, where it was used as a ground maintenance trainer by the 3750th Technical Training Wing.
