EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of a McDonnell Douglas RF-4E Phantom II (6-6424) from the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing of the United States Air Force, as it soars over Greenham Common during the International Air Tattoo on 25 June 1977. The Phantom II, a twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet, was a formidable presence in the skies and played a crucial role in aerial reconnaissance and ground-attack missions. The image was taken just weeks before this very aircraft, with the manufacturer's serial number 2182, tragically crashed near the village of Thuine in West Germany on 25 August 1977. Both crew members, unfortunately, lost their lives in the accident. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the brave men and women who flew these remarkable machines and the risks they took in the name of national security. The International Air Tattoo, held annually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, is one of Europe's largest military air shows. It showcases an impressive array of military aircraft from around the world, providing a unique opportunity for the public to witness the capabilities of these remarkable machines up close. This photograph, taken at an earlier edition of the event held at Greenham Common, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the history of military aviation.
