Tipsy T. 66 Nipper Mk. III G-AVKT

Tipsy Nipper Mk.III G-AVKT (msn 70), prototype of the Mark III, at an air display in the Netherlands, circa 1969, parked next to Le Manchots (the Penguins) aerobatic display team. On 19 August 1972 the aircraft was taking part in a display in which it was to attempt to cut paper streamers; these were carried in the form of toilet rolls in the cockpit and were dropped by the pilot. The first rolls were dropped when the aircraft was 800 feet above the ground and these were successfully cut. Another roll was dropped from only 200 feet and the pilot attempted to turn back to cut the streamer in the limited height remaining as it unfurled. With power on, the nose of the aircraft was seen to rise and a steep turn was started to the left; bank was seen to increase to 75 degrees when the nose dropped and the aircraft dived steeply into the ground, killing the pilot. Date: circa 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Tipsy T. 66 Nipper Mk. III, registration number G-AVKT (msn 70), the prototype of the Mark III, at an air display in the Netherlands around 1969. The Nipper Mk. III is parked next to the Le Manchots (the Penguins) aerobatic display team, adding a sense of camaraderie and excitement to the scene. On August 19, 1972, the Nipper Mk. III was participating in a display with an intriguing objective: attempting to cut paper streamers carried in the form of toilet rolls in the cockpit. The first roll was dropped successfully from a height of 800 feet above the ground. In an attempt to cut the second streamer, the pilot dropped the roll from a mere 200 feet, but unfortunately, he was unable to turn back in time as the streamer unfurled. With power on, the nose of the aircraft rose steeply, and the pilot initiated a left turn to cut the streamer. However, the bank angle increased to a dangerous 75 degrees, causing the nose to drop and the aircraft to plunge steeply into the ground, tragically resulting in the pilot's death. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the thrill and risks involved in aviation, as well as the determination and innovation that drive pilots to push the boundaries of their aircraft. The Nipper Mk. III, with its distinctive appearance and tragic history, continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
