EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Philip V of Spain (1683-1746), who reigned as King of Spain from 1700 to 1724, and again from September 1724 until his death in 1746. Born in Madrid as the son of King Charles II of Spain, Philip ascended to the throne at the age of 17 following the death of his father and the War of the Spanish Succession. During his first reign, he faced numerous challenges, including the ongoing war and the threat of a French invasion. In 1720, he was forced to abdicate in favor of his son, Louis, due to political pressure from European powers. However, upon Louis's death in 1724, Philip resumed the throne. Philip V's reign, known as the Bourbon Dynasty, marked the beginning of the modern, absolutist monarchy in Spain. He centralized power, reformed the administration, and implemented new taxes to fund the military. Philip also promoted the arts and sciences, and his court was known for its cultural achievements. This portrait, created in 1719, shows Philip V in regal attire, wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and holding a scepter and orb. The engraving captures the monarch's strong and determined presence, reflecting his role as a powerful and influential ruler in European history.
