EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative group photograph captures Prince Edward, later King Edward VII, and his wife Alexandra of Denmark with their five children in 1891. Seated among them are their eldest son, Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and their second daughter, Princess Maud, who would later become Queen of Norway by marriage to King Haakon. Standing to the side are their three other children: Princess Louise, Duchess of Fife, Princess Royal; Prince George, who would succeed his brother as second in line to the throne and later become King George V; and Princess Victoria, who remained single. The family is dressed in elegant Victorian attire, with the children displaying an air of innocence and playfulness. Tragically, the family circle was broken just over a year later, on 14 January 1892, when Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, died of influenza complicated with pneumonia at the age of 28. Alexandra and her surviving children were devastated by the loss of their eldest son. Prince George succeeded his brother as second in line to the throne, and the family continued to face challenges and changes in the years to come. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of a moment in time when the future monarch and his family were still intact, and the hopes and dreams of the British people rested on the shoulders of the young Prince of Wales.
