EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph depicts Pteroglossus inscriptus humboldti, also known as the Humboldt's Lettered Aracari or the Brazilian Pye. This beautiful bird is a member of the toucan family, Ramphastidae, and is native to the tropical rainforests of South America. The image, plate 22 from John Gould's A Monograph of the Ramphastid, or family of Toucans, 2nd edition, published in 1854, was produced in collaboration with the skilled lithographers Henry Constantine Richter. The intricate details of the aracari's anatomy are brilliantly captured in this artwork, with its distinctive blue, cream, green, and brown plumage, large, colorful bill, and expressive, brightly-colored eyes. The aracari is shown perched on a branch, surrounded by a vibrant array of angiosperms, or flowering plants. The artist has expertly rendered the delicate details of the flowers, their petals and leaves creating a beautiful contrast against the bold colors of the bird. The aracari's beak is adorned with dashes, a characteristic feature of this species, which is used to mark trees during mating season. The aracari is a diurnal bird, meaning it is active during the daytime. It is an important seed disperser in its habitat, playing a crucial role in the propagation of various plant species. This image not only showcases the beauty of this unique bird but also highlights the intricate relationship between birds and the angiosperms they interact with in their natural environment.
