This enchanting engraving depicts Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780), Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, in a grand and regal pose. Born in Vienna in 1717, Maria Theresa was the eldest daughter of Emperor Charles VI and Elizabeth Christina of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Upon her father's death in 1740, she ascended to the throne of the Habsburg Empire, becoming the first female ruler in the history of the House of Habsburg. Her reign was marked by significant territorial gains, as well as the implementation of various political, economic, and social reforms. In 1747, Maria Theresa married Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine, who became her co-ruler and later succeeded her upon her death in 1780. This engraving, colored by Germania in 1882, showcases the monarch's regal attire, adorned with the imperial crown, as well as the insignia of Hungary and Bohemia.
