EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Raffaello Bertieri (1875-1941) is seen in contemplative pose, his introspective gaze fixed on an open book. Born in Florence, Italy, Bertieri was a publisher, graphic designer, and type designer who made significant contributions to the world of visual arts and literature. Before founding his own printing and publishing house, Bertieri & Vanesetti, he began publishing Il Risorgimento Grafico (Renaissance of the Graphic Arts), a periodical that showcased the latest developments in typography and graphic design. This endeavor laid the groundwork for his future successes. Bertieri & Vanesetti quickly gained notoriety by publishing the works of the renowned Italian poet and writer Gabriele d'Annunzio. Their most famous publication was the edition of L'arte di GB Bodoni, a comprehensive study of the work of the 18th-century typographer Giambattista Bodoni. This publication, with its meticulous attention to detail and high-quality production values, set a new standard for typographic excellence. Bertieri's books were not only visually stunning but also intellectually rigorous, earning numerous accolades. Among the most notable was the recognition they received at the Paris Exposition of 1925, a hugely influential international exhibition that showcased the latest advancements in art, design, and technology. Despite the commercial success of his publishing house, Bertieri remained committed to the pursuit of artistic and typographic excellence. His dedication to the craft earned him a place among the most influential figures in the history of Italian graphic design and typography. This photograph captures the quiet intensity of a man who devoted his life to the art of the printed word.
