EDITORS COMMENTS
Ramon Novarro, born Ramon Samaniegoes on February 6, 1899, in Valles, Durango, Mexico, rose to international fame as a leading man in American silent films during the 1920s. In this iconic image from the 1927 epic "Ben-Hur," Novarro portrays the titular character, Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince who is betrayed and enslaved but ultimately seeks revenge against his adversary, Messala (played by Francis X. Bushman). Novarro's performance in "Ben-Hur" is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of silent films. The chariot race scene, which took over a month to film, became a groundbreaking spectacle and a symbol of the grandeur of the silent era. Novarro's athleticism and dedication to the role were unmatched, and his portrayal of Ben-Hur's determination and resilience left a lasting impression on audiences. Before his breakthrough role in "Ben-Hur," Novarro began his career as a circus performer and later worked as an extra in various films. His natural charisma and stage presence soon caught the attention of Hollywood producers, leading him to sign a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Novarro's success continued through the 1930s, when he transitioned to character roles in talkies. He appeared in over 60 films throughout his career, including "The Frog and the Nightingale," "The Three Musketeers," and "The Sign of the Cross." Despite his achievements, Novarro's personal life was marred by tragedy. In 1968, he was brutally murdered in his Hollywood home by two men who broke in under the pretense of being repairmen. The case remains unsolved, and Novarro's death marked the end of an era for the golden age of Hollywood.
