EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom is seen taking a break in the chow line at the Grand Bahama Island tracking station on July 22, 1961. The day before, Grissom had made history as the second American to fly in space, achieving an altitude of 118 miles during a sub-orbital flight aboard the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft. Surrounded by his fellow astronauts, Grissom is shown in casual attire, wearing a white t-shirt and slacks, as he waits his turn for a meal. Behind him, John Glenn, his alternate pilot for the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission, and Walter Schirra, who would later become the fifth American in space, can be seen engaged in conversation. The Grand Bahama Island tracking station played a crucial role in the success of the Mercury program, providing real-time data and communication between the astronauts and mission control during their flights. After their spaceflights, the astronauts would often stop at the station for a brief rest and debriefing before returning to Cape Canaveral for further testing and preparation for future missions. This photograph captures a moment of relaxation and camaraderie among the brave men who were pushing the boundaries of human exploration. Grissom's groundbreaking sub-orbital flight paved the way for future missions, including John Glenn's historic orbital flight later that year, and the eventual moon landing in 1969.
