EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a line-up of Royal Air Force (RAF) training aircraft from the late 1960s and early 1970s stands proudly on the tarmac. From left to right, we see the Scottish Aviation Jetstream T1, XX489; the first production British Aerospace Hawk T1, XX154; the company demonstrator Scottish Aviation Bulldog, G-ASAL; and the BAC Jet Provost T4, XS230. The Jetstream T1, registration XX489, was a turboprop-powered trainer and utility aircraft that entered RAF service in 1965. Its versatility and efficiency made it a popular choice for various roles, including navigation training, maritime patrol, and communications. The first production Hawk T1, XX154, was delivered to the RAF in 1974. This advanced jet trainer quickly became a mainstay of the RAF's training fleet and continues to serve today in various roles. Its agility and advanced avionics make it an ideal platform for training future generations of RAF pilots. The Scottish Aviation Bulldog, G-ASAL, was a two-seat, piston-engine trainer that first flew in 1964. It was used extensively by the RAF for basic flying training before being replaced by more modern aircraft. The BAC Jet Provost T4, XS230, is a twin-engine jet trainer that entered RAF service in 1959. It was used for advanced flying training and was renowned for its excellent handling characteristics. The Jet Provost remained in RAF service until the late 1990s, making it one of the longest-serving trainer aircraft in RAF history. This photograph captures a moment in time when these iconic RAF training aircraft stood together on the tarmac, each with its unique place in the history of RAF aviation training.
