The XR219, specifically, was the second prototype of the TSR-2, and it first took to the skies on March 25, 1964. The TSR-2 was also the first British military aircraft to incorporate a fly-by-wire flight control system, which greatly improved handling and maneuverability. However, due to its high cost and the changing political climate, the TSR-2 program was ultimately canceled in 1965, with only two prototypes and two pre-production aircraft being built.
