EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1931, we find Miss Delphine Reynolds and her brave pilot, W.G. Pudney, standing next to their damaged Blackburn Bluebird IV aircraft (registration number G-ABGF) on the shores of French Senegal, north of McCarthy Island. The intrepid duo had embarked on a daring survey flight from Hanworth, England, on 1 March 1931, with the intention of traversing the West African coast, stopping at Tangier before reaching their final destination in Bathurst, Gambia. However, their journey took an unexpected turn when they encountered unforeseen challenges in Sierra Leone. The harsh tropical climate and conditions proved too much for the metal airframe of their Bluebird IV, which ultimately succumbed to corrosion after two and a half months. Despite the setback, the determined pair are shown here in high spirits, with Miss Reynolds donning a stylish hat and a confident expression, while Mr. Pudney looks on with a mix of pride and concern. The Blackburn Bluebird IV, a versatile aircraft used for both survey and transport purposes, lies behind them, a testament to their adventurous spirit and resilience in the face of adversity. This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the spirit of exploration and the challenges faced by early aviators as they pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of aviation. The image also offers a glimpse into the history of French Senegal and the rich tapestry of stories that unfolded across the West African coast during this era.
