EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Miss Delphine Reynolds and her fearless pilot, W.G. Pudney, prepare for takeoff from Hanworth Aerodrome in England on a daring adventure across French Senegal in March 1931. Aboard their Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration number G-ABGF, they embarked on a survey flight down the West African coast, with their destination set for Bathurst, the capital of the British protectorate of Gambia. The intrepid explorers had planned to fly over French Senegal, a typical country in Western Africa known for its diverse culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes. The French colonial empire had extended its reach to Senegal in the late 19th century, and the region was a melting pot of African, European, and Arab influences. As they journeyed southward, their aircraft carried them over the breathtaking vistas of the Sahara Desert, the lush forests of the Guinean region, and the bustling ports of Morocco and Senegal. However, their adventure took an unexpected turn when they reached Sierra Leone, where the metal airframe of their Bluebird IV had corroded beyond repair after two and a half months. Despite the setback, Miss Reynolds and Mr. Pudney pressed on, eventually reaching their destination in Bathurst, where Short floats were fitted to their plane. The resilient duo continued their journey, demonstrating the spirit of adventure and determination that characterized the early days of aviation. This photograph captures a moment in time when the world seemed a little smaller, and the possibilities seemed limitless.
