Rufus Quintus Pompeius: A Tragic End to a Distinguished Career (Circa 100 BCE) This haunting image captures the moment of betrayal and tragedy that ended the life of Rufus Quintus Pompeius, a prominent Roman statesman and consul who served under the dictator Sulla. Born into a noble family, Pompeius rose through the ranks of Roman society, earning a reputation for his oratorical skills and political acumen. He was a trusted ally of Sulla during the latter's brutal purge of his political enemies, and was rewarded with the consulship in 70 BCE. However, Pompeius' fortunes took a turn for the worse when he fell out of favor with Sulla's successor, Lucius Cornelius Lentulus Spinther. Seeking to eliminate potential rivals, Spinther ordered Pompeius' assassination. The betrayal was carried out by soldiers under the command of Gaius Manlius Torquatus, who waylaid Pompeius as he traveled through Italy. Despite his tragic end, Pompeius' legacy endured. He was remembered as a man of great ability and integrity, and his oratorical skills were celebrated by later Roman writers. This image, with its stark contrast between the confident, determined expression on Pompeius' face and the ominous shadows that surround him, serves as a poignant reminder of the fragile nature of power and the unpredictable twists and turns of Roman political life.
