EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the dedication and resilience of seven Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses, standing proudly at the front of the Winter Garden in Quex Park during February 1916. Among them is Fanny Watson, who devoted an impressive 10,898 hours to nursing duties during the First World War. Second from the right is Mildred Swinford, who not only served as a VAD nurse but also worked as a masseuse at the hospital. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919, providing essential care to wounded soldiers during those critical years. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, under the command of Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The nurses' unwavering commitment to their patients is evident in their determined expressions, as they braved the winter months to offer comfort and care to those in need. This poignant image serves as a testament to the vital role that VAD nurses played in the war effort and the sacrifices they made to support their communities and country.
