EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667-1747), a prominent Jacobite intriguer and Scottish nobleman. The image, created in the late 17th or early 18th century, showcases Lovat's regal bearing and distinctive attire, complete with a plaid kilt and a feathered bonnet. Born into the ancient Clan Fraser, Lovat rose to prominence during the tumultuous period of Scottish history known as the Jacobite Rebellions. He was a staunch supporter of the exiled Stuart monarchy and played a pivotal role in several uprisings against the British crown. Lovat's allegiance to the Stuart cause earned him the nickname "The Old Fox," a testament to his cunning and resourcefulness. Despite his unwavering commitment to the Jacobite cause, Lovat's loyalties were not always unwavering. In a calculated move, he switched sides during the final Jacobite Rebellion in 1745, aligning himself with the British forces under the Duke of Cumberland. This betrayal, however, did not save him from the gallows. After the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden, Lovat was captured and tried for treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to death, becoming the last person to be executed in Britain for this offense. This portrait of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, offers a glimpse into the complex and intriguing world of Scottish Jacobitism during a time of political upheaval and shifting alliances. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the Stuart monarchy and the lasting impact of the Jacobite Rebellions on Scottish history.
