Sir Henry Morton Stanley

SIR HENRY MORTON STANLEY British-US explorer and journalist, pictured in 1890. In October 1869, Stanley was sent by James Gordon Bennett (the owner of the New York Herald) to find Dr. David Livingstone, who had been exploring central Africa for several years without passing any communication to Europe. In 1871 Stanley found Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganika, and with it also, fame and some fortune. Stanley led several further expeditions to Africa, the last of these in 1886 to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892 he took British citizenship and was Unionist MP for Lambeth between 1895 and 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Morton Stanley: The Intrepid Explorer and Journalist (1841-1904) This photograph captures Sir Henry Morton Stanley, the renowned British-American explorer and journalist, in the year 1890. Stanley's fame began in 1869 when James Gordon Bennett, the owner of the New York Herald, sent him on a mission to find the missing Scottish missionary and explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who had been exploring central Africa for several years without any contact with Europe. Stanley's successful discovery of Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganyika, in 1871, brought him both fame and fortune. He went on to lead several other expeditions to Africa, the last one in 1886, to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892, Stanley took British citizenship and served as the Unionist MP for Lambeth between 1895 and 1900. Stanley's exploits in Africa were not only groundbreaking in terms of geographical discovery but also in the realm of journalism. He sent regular dispatches back to the New York Herald, providing the first-hand accounts of his adventures that captivated the world. This photograph, taken towards the end of his illustrious career, shows a man who had not only braved the uncharted territories of Africa but also brought its stories to the masses. Sir Henry Morton Stanley's legacy as an explorer and journalist continues to inspire and intrigue, and this photograph is a testament to his indomitable spirit and adventurous nature.
