Studio photograph of a Belgian soldier patient in civilian clothes. On the reverse is written in pencil in the hand of Major Powell-Cotton Jules Deruwez 8.2.15. Jules Deruwez was a patient of the Birchington VAD at Quex Park. He was one of the first group of patients admitted at Quex Park by the Birchington VAD on 14 November 1914. He remained until 3 February 1915. He had a broken arm. He lived in Houdeng-Aimeries in Belgium. He was in the 23e de Ligne regiment and was 25 years old. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1915

This evocative studio photograph captures the portrait of Jules Deruwez, a Belgian soldier who was a patient at the Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) at Quex Park during the First World War. The image shows Jules in civilian clothes, with a bandaged right arm slung across his chest. On the reverse of the print, in pencil, is the inscription "Jules Deruwez 8.2.15," indicating that the photograph was taken on 8 February 1915. Jules was one of the first group of patients admitted to Quex Park VAD Hospital on 14 November 1914. He had sustained a broken arm and remained in the hospital until 3 February 1915. Originally from Houdeng-Aimeries in Belgium, Jules served in the 23e de Ligne regiment and was just 25 years old at the time of his injury. Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. It was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, and commanded by Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park. The Powell-Cotton Museum, founded by Major Powell-Cotton, is located on the same estate. This poignant photograph offers a glimpse into the experiences of the many soldiers who were treated at the Quex Park VAD Hospital during the First World War.
