EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 18th century print depicts a trio of individuals from the Tartar community of Kohonor, China. The central figures are a man and a woman, both dressed in traditional Eastern garments with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. Their expressions suggest a deep connection and mutual respect. Flanking them on either side are two figures of great importance to the Tartar community: a Lama or priest. The Lama on the left is dressed in the distinctive robes of a Tibetan Buddhist monk, with a shaved head and a long, flowing beard. He holds a ceremonial drum in his left hand and a small object, possibly a religious text, in his right. The Lama on the right is more casually dressed, with a fur hat and a long, flowing robe. He holds a staff in one hand and a small bowl in the other, which may contain offerings or symbolize the offering of blessings. This print was created based on an original drawing by Johann Grueber, an Austrian Jesuit missionary and astronomer who visited China and Tibet in the 1650s. Grueber's detailed observations and illustrations were a valuable contribution to European knowledge of the Far East during this period. The print provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Tartars of Kohonor, a community that straddled the cultural divide between China and Tibet. The figures are depicted with a sense of dignity and respect, reflecting the complex and nuanced relationships between different communities in the region during this period.
