EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale, later 14th Duke of Hamilton (1903-1973), on the front cover of The Tatler magazine in 1924. The Scottish nobleman and aviation pioneer is depicted at the Amateur Boxing Championships held at Alexandra Park, where he participated as a promising middle-weight contender. Born into one of Scotland's most distinguished aristocratic families, Douglas and Clydesdale gained a Blue in boxing while studying at Balliol College, Oxford University. In this particular competition, he faced a formidable opponent in Sergeant F.P. Crawley of the Army Boxing Association, ultimately losing the semi-final on points after a closely contested match. Dick Smith, the renowned professional boxing coach, is seen in the background, performing the final adjustments to his pupils' "mittens" – a testament to the sporting spirit that permeated the upper classes during this era. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of aristocracy, society, and sport in early 20th-century Britain. Douglas and Clydesdale's boxing career was just one facet of his multifaceted life. He would later make a name for himself as an aviation pioneer, further cementing his place in history.
