EDITORS COMMENTS
Tintoretto, born Jacopo Robusti in Venice in 1518, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of the Renaissance period, specifically during the Cinquecento era. Known as Il Tintoretto, meaning "the little dyer," due to his father's profession, Tintoretto's artistic talent emerged early in life. This stunning print depicts one of Tintoretto's most famous works, "The Last Supper," created between 1547 and 1548. The painting is housed in the Accademia Gallery in Venice and is a testament to Tintoretto's innovative approach to the traditional subject matter. Unlike Leonardo da Vinci's famous version of The Last Supper in Milan, Tintoretto's interpretation is characterized by its dynamic composition and dramatic use of light and shadow. The Apostles are depicted in various states of emotion and reaction, with Christ at the center, reaching out to touch the hand of Judas Iscariot, who is shown betraying Him. Tintoretto's mastery of color and brushwork is evident in the intricately detailed robes and facial expressions of the figures, as well as the dramatic use of perspective to create a sense of depth and space. The painting's rich, vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes set it apart from the more subdued, classical style of other Renaissance artists. The Last Supper is considered a pivotal work in Tintoretto's career and a significant contribution to the Venetian school of the Renaissance period. Its innovative composition and dramatic use of light and shadow continue to captivate viewers and inspire artists to this day.
