EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the legendary tale of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, unleashing his wrath upon the city of Troy as a result of King Laomedon's failure to pay his debt. According to ancient mythology, Laomedon had sought the assistance of Poseidon and his brother Hephaestus in building the walls of Troy. In gratitude for their help, Laomedon had promised to pay them handsomely. However, when the time came to fulfill his promise, Laomedon reneged on his word and refused to pay the gods what was owed. Enraged by this breach of trust, Poseidon exacted his vengeance upon Troy. He sent a monstrous sea creature to ravage the city, causing widespread destruction and chaos. In an attempt to appease the wrathful god, Laomedon was forced to sacrifice his own daughter, Hesione, to the sea monster. The image captures the moment of desperation and despair as Laomedon looks on as his daughter is taken by the monster, while the city of Troy is swallowed by the relentless floodwaters. This classical print, featuring the powerful and vengeful Poseidon, serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of broken promises and the wrath of the gods. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the myth to life, transporting us back to a time when gods and monsters roamed the earth and shaped the course of history.
