EDITORS COMMENTS
Yeni-Djama, also known as Yeni Cami, or the New Mosque, is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Istanbul, Turkey. This photograph, taken between approximately 1890 and 1900, captures the mosque in all its glory under the soft, ethereal glow of the moonlight. The Yeni-Djama was constructed between 1597 and 1601 during the rule of Mehmet III, and it is a prime example of Ottoman architecture. The mosque complex includes four minarets, a madrasa, a hospice, a primary and secondary school, a kitchen, a tomb of the Sultan, and a hamam or Turkish bath. The intricate design of the mosque is showcased beautifully in this photograph, with its cascading domes, ornate tilework, and delicate calligraphy. The reflection of the moonlight on the calm waters of the Golden Horn adds an otherworldly quality to the scene, transporting us back in time to the 19th century. The use of the Photochrom process, a popular method for producing colored photographs during this era, adds a richness and depth to the image, bringing the history of Constantinople to life. The nostalgia evoked by this photograph is palpable, inviting us to imagine the hustle and bustle of the city during this period, the sounds of the call to prayer echoing through the streets, and the aroma of spices and exotic foods wafting through the air. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and history of Constantinople, a city that has been a melting pot of cultures for centuries. It is a reminder of the rich heritage that Turkey possesses and the importance of preserving it for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
