Nine year strike. James Downey owner of Downeys public house, Dun Laoghaire

Nine year strike. James Downey owner of Downeys public house, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin employs non union assistance following a disagreement over employment of a bar maid with the national Union of Vinters, Grocers and Allied Trades Assistants, that was nine years ago. He pays more than union rates but for nine years a picket has paced up and down outside his pub. The pickets it is estimated covered over 28000 miles and its the longest strike in the world.
The publican has a sense of humour for he rings up the Union if the pickets are late on duty and when the snows about he has it swept away to make it more comfortable for the pickets. Our Picture Shows; Landlord James Downeyserving a pint to one of his regulars. 16th February 1948

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable story of a nine-year strike that took place in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. The image showcases James Downey, owner of Downeys public house, serving a pint to one of his loyal customers amidst the ongoing picket line outside his establishment. The dispute began when the national Union of Vinters, Grocers and Allied Trades Assistants disagreed with Downey's decision to employ a bar maid who was not affiliated with their union. Despite offering wages higher than union rates, an unyielding picket has been pacing up and down outside his pub for nearly a decade. The dedication displayed by these picketers is truly extraordinary; it is estimated that they have covered over 28,000 miles during this prolonged protest - making it the longest strike in history. However, despite this tense situation, Downey manages to maintain a sense of humor throughout it all. In an amusing twist, he occasionally calls up the Union if the pickets are late on duty and even ensures that snow is promptly swept away from their path during winter months to provide them with more comfort. This lighthearted approach adds an unexpected touch to such a serious matter. Tommy Lea's photograph encapsulates both resilience and contentment within its frame – reminding us that even in times of adversity and disagreement, life goes on inside those four walls where patrons continue to enjoy their drinks at Downeys public house.
