Corfe Castle, The Square, Wareham, Dorset, rises behind a drystone wall

Corfe Castle, The Square, Wareham, Dorset, rises behind a drystone wall. Corfe Castles location - sandwiched on a hill, in a gap between two other hill ranges made it almost impossible to attack. As a result it was largely used as the Royal Treasury. It was also famous for being the location of one of the few cases of known regicide in Britain - on the 15th April 975, the young King Edward was stabbed in the back as he mounted his horse whilst hunting in Purbeck - he was buried without honours as he was (clearly) unpopular with the nobility, yet his body was later exhumed and found to be untouched by decay. As a result he was declared a saint and a martyr. Pictured is an old man balancing onions on his shoulder, 28th August 1952

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting village of Corfe Castle in Wareham, Dorset. Standing tall behind a sturdy drystone wall, the magnificent Corfe Castle dominates the landscape with its imposing presence. Nestled amidst two hill ranges, this strategic location made it nearly impregnable and thus served as a safe haven for the Royal Treasury. However, history tells us that this fortress holds more than just tales of wealth and power. It was here on April 15th, 975, that a tragic event unfolded - young King Edward met his untimely demise when he was treacherously stabbed in the back while preparing to mount his horse during a hunting expedition in Purbeck. Despite being unpopular among nobility during his reign, Edward's body miraculously remained untouched by decay after being exhumed years later. This extraordinary occurrence led to him being declared a saint and martyr. In this particular snapshot from August 28th, 1952, we are transported to an era long gone. An elderly man wearing a French beret effortlessly balances onions upon his shoulder against the backdrop of Corfe Castle's ruins. The image captures not only the charm of rural life but also hints at how time has woven together centuries-old history with everyday scenes of ordinary people going about their lives. With its rich historical significance and picturesque landscapes like these captured moments ago on film by an unknown photographer from Memory Lane Prints; it is no wonder why tourists flock to this National Trust site year after year seeking both tranquility and adventure amidst such breathtaking beauty.
